- Wood or low-maintenance vinyl, floored or set on your own deck
- Turned spindles in four patterns, or open rails if you prefer the view
- Electrical package for lights, outlets and a ceiling fan
- Full screening with a screen door, so you can sit out at dusk
A gazebo earns its place by being the one part of the garden nobody has to be persuaded to use. Ours are framed the old way — eight rafters cut to meet at a single peak, rather than a flat roof dressed up to look like one — which is why the ceiling looks right from underneath.
Wood is the warmer choice and takes stain beautifully. Vinyl costs a little more up front and then asks nothing of you for twenty years. Both sit on the same pressure-treated frame, and both come floored or unfloored depending on whether you are putting it on grass or on an existing patio.
Getting the size right
The mistake people make is buying for the photograph rather than the table. A ten-foot octagon looks generous empty and seats six once a table is in it. If you plan to eat out there regularly, go to twelve. If it is somewhere to sit with a coffee, ten is plenty and leaves more lawn.
Where it goes
Reasonably level ground and a route the truck can use. We set the smaller sizes complete; from fourteen feet up we assemble on site in a morning. Either way it is finished, levelled and anchored before we leave.
